Lofoten Islands – Where Mountains Meet the Sea
Chasing the midnight sun in one of Norway's most dramatic archipelagos.
There are places that stay with you long after you leave. The Lofoten Islands are one of them. A chain of jagged peaks rising straight from the Norwegian Sea, painted in colors that seem almost impossible — emerald water, golden sun, and snow-dusted granite.
I arrived in early May, just as the midnight sun season was beginning. 24 hours of daylight messes with your sense of time, but it also means unlimited golden hour. I spent my days hiking the ridges above Reine, kayaking through the fjords, and photographing the iconic red fishing cabins against the endless sunset.
The best spots:
- Reinebringen hike – steep but worth it for the view over Reine
- Å village – the end of the road, literally. Tiny, quiet, beautiful.
- Uttakleiv beach – white sand and turquoise water. Feels tropical until you touch the water.
“The light in Lofoten is something else. It paints the mountains in a way no filter could ever replicate.”
If you’re a photographer, put this on your list. If you’re not a photographer, this place will make you want to become one.
